Hi Joe,

Last year I imported a M535i from Switzerland. It was (is) pretty expensive to have the car converted to US emmission regs & DOT. ($6K). Cost of transport by ocean freight only $600. So make sure if you do this, get a good price on the car. AND you cannot do this conversion yourself --unless you have the ROI license papers filed with DOT & EPA.

Any car newer than 1974 will have to go through this conversion to make the car "legal" in the US.

And be prepared for some local burecratic red tape once the car is fully converted etc. The cops really "loved" my car when I had it inspected --lucky for me there is no emmision checking where I live so that was a no brainer. But the car would meet those standards anyway (registered importer gave me 5 years emmission warranty)

For more info look here.

Later,
Frank
