Hi Joe,

Technicaly you are correct in that a car not EPA or DOT'ed could be brought into the country. BUT I believe you would still need to apply to US customs/DOT etc to get permission to import the car. AND you may need to have a proper racing (SCCA type) license. There are not many importers that are willing to go throught the headache of applying for special permission for you (as they would make very little $$). If you look at the NHTSA rules you can import ANY car for display/demostration purposes etc --but only for a limited time frame.

I think several new Lotus Elise's have made it into the US in this manner (for racing purposes only). I've seen one this summer at the local vintage race meet.

If you don't get EPA/DOT and approval. It might be very hard to obtain a proper US title for the car. I had to furnish ALL EPA/DOT original documents and proof of conversion (payed invoices) before the Washington state DMV would furnish me a title.

This is not a big deal as long as you don't plan on ever selling the car to an individual for proper highway use.

It seems to me that is would be alot of work importing a M635csi that you could never "legally" drive on the street. Since there are quite a few nice ones here in the US for sale at reasonable prices.

Later,
Frank
