: On a side note, does anyone with an M635 put octane booster in their gas? I've noticed that the manual calls for an octane rating that you can't get in the states. Even with 94 I sometimes get pinging, and given how deep in the engine the chambers are if I can hear it it must be really bad. I've taken to adding booster and the change in performance has been noticable. However, I've heard that adding booster can lead to deposits. Anyone know anything more on this subject?

Aviation fuel in grade 100LL ( 100 octane low lead) added 1 part av gas to 6 parts unleaded regular should stop the pinging and have some benefits to a non-catalyst car. It is available for about $2.00/gal at airports and usually one can have a 55 gal drum filled at his local airport.
Note that while this works wonderfully, it is illegal to introduce lead into any car used on public highways. Some EPA check stations check the tailpipe for lead deposits in the last inch or two of tailpipe when performing emmission checks. Of course, wirebushing the interior of the pipes with a small drill-mounted brush would remove most of any such deposits.
I know that no performance oriented BMW owner would ever contemplate breaking any law.
