speedo sender (archive)

my 1984 633 has a electronic speedo sender in the differental. Iit does not appear to be removable. My question is if I change rear end ratio gears will I have to replace a drive gear on the speedo sender? How does it work anyway does it just count axle rotations with a magnet or is it a generator driven by gears?
