: I have a beautiful 1984 633CSi w/auto transmission. I am seriously considering upgrading with a 3.5 liter engine, exhaust and wiring harness (w/ECU). I have a couple of BMW mechanics encouraging this upgrade. They are very good and only work on BMWs. Any suggestions or comments?

I own a 535is and a 633CSi and drive lots of 3.3 and 3.5 litre engined BMWs and unless your engine is shot and you don't want to rebuild it, I don't see enough power difference to make it worth the money or hassle. You theoretically only gain 1 hp and about 20 ft/lb of torque.

Your 633 has a 3.25 dif and most 635s came with 3.45 so some of the gut-level feeling of more power with the 635 may have been due to the ratio difference.

In fact I just drove an auto equipped Euro 633 (200hp) with 100K that would blow the doors off of a beautiful like-new '86 635 (182hp) with 65K I have in my shop.
