An old trick is to radically retard the spark (move closer to TDC)to the point where it will barely run. With the timing so far retarded, when the spark plug fires, the exhaust valve is beginning to open. The result is super clean emissions, but no power. Reset the timing and you're good for another two years. This trick will not work however, if you are failing due to excessive hdyrocarbons (unburned fuel).
