Guru Rick Stormer from NH gave me this tip, and I thought I'd pass it on. The problem was fouled plugs caused by too many cold starts in a row. The solution is to either replace the plugs, or clean them with a propane torch aimed at the ceramic insulator. This worked like a charm. Of course the real solution is to stop using the car for short trips.
