: I'm considering buying an 88 635csi with 100K miles from a Michigan dealer. Common sense tells me that cars in this state are exposed to road treatment (salt & sand) most of the year, speeding up the rusting factor. The price is right but how concerned should I be about rust on this car? Should I be turning my back on this deal and concentrating on southern cars? Any feedback on this issue,
: especially from people living in this area, is highly appreciated.

I have an 88 L6 and I can tell you the places to look for rust. Number one, the fenders, about 3 to 4 inches towards the front of the car from the wheel. Look along the the bottom of the metal where it meets the upper part of the bumper. This is always a bad spot on 6's. Then go the rear of the car and look around the license plate area. Water typically sits there and begins to rot away the very corners of that area. While back there, check the taillight area and also there 2 small lights above the license plate that are usually a haven for rust. Now, check the sunroof area, really good. Also, check the drain tubes in the sunroof. If there is alot of rust in this area be cautious for leaks. Now fenders can be replaced for about $600 to $700, but the rear end area is very expensive and I wouldn't bother purchasing the car . Same goes for the sunroof. One last area you want to check for rust or leaks is around the front and back windshields. Water collects in the corners easily and eats at the metal and wears away the seal. I live in Chicago so I have pretty good idea about battling the rust. Good Luck
