My box was way out of whack when I got the car and the mechanic couldn't help. He even charged me for attempting to adjust it and then suggested I replace it. Someone had apparently read a tuning manual and thought it would be cool to loosen the spring for a richer mixture. It was way loose. So I opened up the airbox and took out the filter and moved the flap with my hand to see if more or less spring tension would make it run smoother. I pushed the throttle cable with one hand to hold it at steady speed and then moved the air flap with the other hand to see what would make it run smoother. This worked and it ran great, but I switched to a Split Sec MAF anyway so the vane type sensor sits on a shelf now. A new temp sensor might help too..
