If you turn the key to 'deabolt' position, you can ruin the entire mechanism using an aftermarket power door lock to open the car! Trust me, I had to replace the entire thing in my L6. The security system on my euro is activated at the rear of the car, see 'alarm key' posts below from Newbie, etc.

Regardless, NEVER use the key if you are using a remote, and vise versa, if you do, be CERTAIN not to deadbolt the lock...
