You will NEVER end this debate, because you are wrong. The car has the L package, and may very well have 'L635csi' on the door jamb. ALL owners manuals from 87-on say 635csi, L635csi, M6. YOUR CAR IS A 635csi, NOT an L6. Get it straight. It may appear to be an L6, but once again, your emblems tell a different story. As a matter of fact, ALL L6 cars had the smaller engine. SO THERE. You will never convince me your car is an L6, because it is not. Obviously, your skull is as thick as mine, and this issue will NEVER be resolved; however, I'm right, and you are wrong. This can EASILY be solved by a call to BMW NA, who will confirm your car to be a 635csi. Heck, my insurance says my car is a "635i," but it is actually an M6. My L7 was titled as a 735i. Just because your owners' manual says L6 on it does not mean diddly. The 88 5 speed cars (which, by the way, are FAR more rare than your vehicle), still had the L package, and "L" in the door jamb, but as we all know, the L6 was only available as an AUTO, and was made in 1987 ONLY. The reason they quit calling it 'L6' is a direct result of the problems that arose from the shoddy dash covers...BMW wanted to distance themselves from that defect, and dubbed the 88/89 cars 635csi's, even with the L package. Another rarity is an '87 automatic WITHOUT the L package, but WITH the leather dash/door tops. I have only seen ONE of these, and it had NO cooler, or stitched console. It also had a standard headliner.

THE ONLY L6's said "L6" on the decklid when new, PERIOD. I can buy an emblem that says whatever I'd like it to, 850ci, for example, but my car will ALWAYS be an M6...

On a side note, be glad you have such a nice car, and be REALLY happy to have the pretty bumper- stays. The real L6 had the ugly rubber ones...
