Could be the brake bomb. When mine was failing, braking action was normal, but I could force the pedal to the floor with steadily applied pressure. Bomb is the nitrogen filled accumulator located directly below the master cylinder that provides reserve power assist if the engine is shut off.

: I have a "new" 86csi auto w/ 120,000 that brakes very smooth during normal braking. If though, you must add agerssive pressure during normal braking the brakes get very mushy and almost go away unless you rapidally pump. It comes right back though and does not bleed away during full braking at a stop. Feels like amaster cylinder then again I'm just learning about the car and I'm only hoping there may be a alternate possibility.
