Just had this problem on my M635. Most of these electrical problems are due to corrosion in the connectors. The speedo input is from a sensor on the differential, and there is an adacent plug and socket between the diff and the wiring through the rear floor. I had the garage break and remake this connection. They said the plug and socket was fine, nothing amiss, but it solved the problem. The action of making and remaking the connection help wipe the contacts clean, so try this as the first step.
