Most folks use the E28 five series Bentley manual as the six is based on this model. ISBN 0837603188. Cost in Canada is about $CDN 65; couldn't find it on Amazon.com though.
For electrical problems, I would highly recommend the Electrical Trouble Shooting manual (ETM), which provides very good schematics and component location photos/information, along with trouble shooting procedures. I think this is still a dealer available part, if not they are available on the 'net. Note they are year range specific. I think the cost is around $ US 100.
You can also consider the BMW Service Manual Microfiche, which comes up from time to time on eBay. You have to cut down the size of the fiche to fit a conventional North American size reader though. I got mine on eBay, and there are some sellers on the 'net. These are often sold as 'good used' condition for about $ US 70 .
The BMW Parts CD can also be helpful, as it contains exploded diagrams of various assemblies. This is available from the dealer or on the 'net. I think the cost is about $ US 30 to $ US 50.
Another source of good DIY info is the Big Coupe Groupe FAQ at:

Hope this helps!
