: : there is a dinan chip available. i had one in my 87 auto and it did make a performance difference. i think cost was about $250. self install and does not hurt gas mileage.a K&N filter will also help airflow. use the insert filter that replaces your stock filter. not the cone unit.
: To offer a contrary opinion on the K&N - I had one on a 95 525i, and noticed no appreciable difference. However, having attended a tech session where Jim Conforti (the chip guru) spoke, I will never use a K&N replacement filter again. His tests on the dyno showed no HP advantage to the K&N. More importantly, after the filter got dirty, it actually allowed LESS airflow than a similarly used stock filter; however, the K&N did allow more dirt, grit, etc to get past the filter and into the engine. I've since seen others refer to them as "engine sanders."
Heres What K&M say:
K&N Filtercharger - Performance Air Filters:
Performance is greatly improved with the K&N Filtercharger. The sandwiched layers of cotton gauze, specially treated with K&N air filter oil, provides five times more filtering surface over the element circumference. This serves to smooth incoming air flow while reducing intake restriction. The increased intake of non-turbulent air allows the engine to receive a larger, smoother gulp of air. The result is "free horsepower" and improved engine performance.
