Very few businesses are going to make a product and say "hey, its junk." However, I have come to trust Jim Conforti. First, his chip has made a noticable difference in my car; second, he has an enthusiastic following among many BMW owners, and the M3 crowd in particular; and, third, he refuses to sell a chip for the 1988 528e "super eta" engine because, in his own words, he can't get enough improvement out of his chip to warrant the price. This is all, of course, my opinion. I offer it so you can consider it when making a choice. Of course, free advice is always worth what you pay for it!
