Wil:
My 1987 ///M6 (date of manufacture 12 86)has a sticker on the driver's door referring to the Canadian equivalent of the FMVSS. Perhaps you can find out the exact differences between these specifications through BMW Canada or the Canadian Department of Transport (DOT). Might want to confirm with the pressnt owner that the candidate car has this sticker intact, as I suspect this is what BMW Canada or BMW NA would rely on if you seek a letter from them indicating the candidate car meets US specs.
A few points of difference:
* The 1987 model year in Canada was not equipped with airbags. I think this was the same as the US 1987 model, but you might want to check. Hope this extra info is of help. Good luck! Stu : I am planning to import a 87 635csi BMW from Canada and is wondering what is involved. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks, this a great site used info to fix My 88 735i
* The speedometer and odometer will be in kilometers rather than miles. The Canadian ///M6 does not even have miles on an inner scale of the speedometer face, but the 635 CSi does. Not sure if this would have to be changed for importation down south. The website noted in the response below seems to indicate it will. To convert to miles, multiply km's by 5/8ths.
* The Canadian 635 and ///M6 were equipped with standard North American specification 5 3/4" sealed beam headlights, the same as US cars. You should be OK on this point, provided they have not been upgraded.
* The OBC is a little different, as readout is in km/hour and liters/100 km rather than miles/hour and miles/gallon.
* The '87 Canadian cars were equipped with heated seats
* Note that the Canadian market did not get the L6 model. However, the '87 635CSi has all the standard electrical features of the US models. Will probably have the leather comfort seats rather than the leather sport seats.
* To my knowledge, the Canadian cars are otherwise the same as US models. They are certainly equipped with a cat, and have the same HP ratings as the US cars.
