: My 1985 635Csi has a starting problem when the engine is not cold enough to activate the cold start valve. When the temp drops in the 30 - 40 range, the car start on the first crack. However, when it is warmer; 60's or warm engine, it starts and missing a second or two with puffs of black smoke and then runs fine. If I stop the engine and restart it cranks fine. If I wait more than 15 minutes, it misses with puffs of black smoke and then runs fine. Can anyone help. The cold start valve has been replaced, regulator is ok, check valve replaced.
check the thermo time switch for continuity when the engine is warm - it may be leaving the cold start valve open too long. It's the brown switch on the thermostat housing.
Look at your plugs to see if you're running rich - I hear Motronic does this when it gets older but I don't know why.
Also, try some fuel system cleaner for good measure. You could have clogged injectors. Redline is great if you can find it.
