rpm sensor/tach problems (archive)

I am trying to help a friend with a '85 635csi euro who has a tachometer problem. All the gauges in the instrument cluster work except the tachometer. The instrument cluster has had the Ni-Cad's replaced. Also the odometer does not register miles. Any suggestions?
