Kane,
I didn't try your suggestion for the following reason: after consulting with Steve H. about what the problem could be, it turned out to be the O2 sensor on its way out. I disconnected it at the firewall and have had no more symptoms like before. Not to worry, a new 02 sensor is on its way as we speak. Thanks for your help though. I will keep it in mind.

: I had the same problem with my 85 635. The symptoms got steadily worse until finally it wouldn't start anymore. It turned out to be the fuel pump relay.

: This is located on the front side of the fuse box. There are two relays sheathed in rubber. It should be the one on the right. The relay to the left of it is the Main relay and has 5 prongs.

: The fuel pump relay has only 4 prongs and can be switched with any of the 30A 12V relays in the fuse box for easy testing.

: This cleared my problem right up and saved me a chunk of change that a local shop was trying to sucker me into paying for a new fuel pump.

: Good Luck - Let us know if this helped.
