: what do i need in terms of a shorter driveshaft to fit this 262 into my ride? im putting this in a 77 630 and the used tranny came out of a 80 5 series, ive got them side by side and the other 262(from the 5) is longer, the input shaft splines are the same though, and ive swapped bellhousings. also need to figure out what to do about the shifter plate, there is another hole closer to the tranny, but i would need to cut off the cup and weld it on the other hole? or can i find a new plate? help me

First you need to get the appropriate driveshaft for the 262 tranny. The one from the 80' 5 series would work. (you did get the transmission lower crossmember too right?). If in a pinch an automatic driveshaft could be fitted (about 3/4" shorter) I don't think you should need to swap bellhousings from the 4spd to the 5spd as they both should have the correct bolt pattern for the big six engine. (the one on the 5spd should be the right length for the new driveshaft)

As for the shifter plate. You need to use the one that came on the 5 speed transmission. It is quite different in shape and in how it mounts to the tranny than the old 4 speed one. To fit this new shifter plate to the tranmission tunnel requires either to weld in the correct mounting bracket from the 5 speed car OR drill a hole in the top of the tunnel and bolt the rear shifter plate there.(use a rubber isolator mount)
