: Need ideas on a brake upgrade. The stock pad/rotor combo starts fading after some hard driving. Is there a different pad/rotor setup suitable for a drivng school(1/2 hour track sessions). Thanx in advance. Chris in Traverse City
What year is your E-24?
I have done a significant amount of brake torque and bias calculations for the E-24, E-28 & E-34.
The 9/82 and later models will work with a host of brake rotors and calipers without anyother modifications.
The rear brakes should be upgraded to 300x20mm rotors from the 540/M5 and 40mm piston rear calipers from the E-34, 540/M5 or E-32, 740/750
The front will perform best with 4 piston calipers such as, the 300x30mm rotors and 4 piston caliper from the M6 or the 324x30mm rotor and 4 piston caliper from the 840/850. Not all 850 (before 8/93)have the 4 piston calipers. The early model 850 single piston calipers will fit but the brake balance will be to much to the front wheels. The 12mm increase in radius is some what minimal. The brake torque calculations use the effective radius and caliper piston size to determine brake torque. As I wrote the 12mm is not much of an increase. The most important factor is that you upgrade the 284x10mm rotors with 35mm caliper piston in the rear when you upgrade the fronts. Upgrading the fronts alone will just put additional heat load on the larger front brakes you install and that can cause the new front brakes to fade and or warp the rotors. I suggest that you purchase new rear rotors of you can't find a 540 with good rotors in the salvage yard and then buy rebuilt calipers for the E-34, 540/M5
The E-34 740/750 rear rotors will not fit the E-24 even though the calipers will.
Should you desire a set of M6, 300x30mm front rotors and calipers off my 88, M6 I will sell them for $400. They are in excellent condition with more then 80% of the rotors and pads remaining.
