: My 1986 BMW 635CSi has a few problems with the instruments. When I first start the car, the tach will not work. I was told that it needs to warm up first. After hours of driving, most of the time, it doens't work. Sometimes it will. Once I saw it bounce up from 2 to 3 and all over the place and then die. The same happens with my Temp gauge. It will bounce from hot to cold and then fall at either end. My fuel gauge reads 3/4 tank when it is topped off. I read in the 6 Series Enthusiast's Companion that this is due to bad SI batteries. I read that it would cost $200 at a dealer, but the batteries can be replaced inexpensively. How do i do this?? Also, the lighting on the right side ventilation controls (fan speed, etc) doesn't turn on, but if i tap the dash, they do. Could that be the batteries or a loose wire? Thanks for your help.

Dan,
Replacing the SI batteries are cheap and not hard to do. Worth a try. Check the BCG FAQ site for clear instructions (http://web2.airmail.net/grills/b_c_g_FAQ/Electrical.html#anchor6436272.) It cost me about 20 bucks to replace the 2 AA batteries to a remote location and build the reset tool (see the yellow Enthusiast's Companion book for instructions). My dealer wanted about $475 to replace the pc boards. Good luck.
