: how easy, or hard is it to replace bottom hinge on drivers side..1980 635 euro. thanks curt

: my brother has a 1985M635CSi, and a few years ago, the upper pin was cracked in the hinge assembly, and it was a difficult fix. I went to a BMW dealership with a body shop, and ordered a new hinge (around $50 or $60). You will need to take the interior panel off to gain access to the 3 bolts per hinge. First, support bottom edge of the door by the b-pillar with a floor jack (I used an assortment of books, so as not to scratch the paint). Actually, remove the shield riveted to each hinge under the A-pillar first, then you will have access to the phillips screw holding the hinge to the body. You will need a hand held impact driver to loosen the screws on the hinge you want to remove, as they are very tight. Once loosened, loosen the bolts behind the door panel (make sure the door is supported!), remove those bolts, then slide the door back, remove the old hinge assembly, and install the new one. The hard part is supporting the door (this is a two person job, and I had to do it alone), and then re-installing the door so all the character lines mate to OEM specs; that is where a floor jack comes in handy, which gives you the ability to raise and lower the door. Good luck, as anyway you look at, it is a tough job.
