You're right on both counts. It's been some time since I did all my original learning about the physics of sound and how it applies to you and me. I forgot that 3dB threshold fact completely until you mentioned it. Thanks for the reminder-- as you know, I just wanted to make the point that it takes more amplifier power than it's worth to try to overcome noise by making your system louder.
Also, I should've pointed out (I don't think I even mentioned it) that if you believe in originality, "collector value", or just plain want to sell your car again ever, you shouldn't do ANY screwing around like this. In fact, the cardinal rules there are: 1. Never, ever cut the car for any reason, and 2. Any monies spent or effort put in to any system is just lost money-- it will never come back in a sale; if anything you will need to discount the price to account for it.
Thanks for pointing that stuff out-- I hope people read the entire thread. Naturally all this talk assumes a certain level of ability to do the work-- I do not want to encourage complete amatuers to mess with thier cars in this way. In fact, the reason I got into car audio in the first place was because I HAD to to actually get professional work done. I paid thousands to "professional" install shops, and; just like many BMW mechanics, unfortunately-- they were anything BUT professional, and absolutely shameless about the scandalous way they do business. Trust no one, friends, who stands to make money off you and your car. We who love them will give you better advice (and help!) for free...
Keep the faith...
