The fuel pressure should hold. You have a pressure leak somewhere. I had a '77 530i with the same problem. My fix was to replace the pump after checking all fuel line connections. I have heard of temporary fixes where a check valve was plumbed into the fuel line to keep pressure from bleeding backwards through the fuel pump. Also, some BMWs have these little hockey-puck-looking pressure dampening devices at the end of the fuel rail on the return line. If you see any fuel wetness on this device, get rid of it. I saw a car burn from fuel leaking here. When I checked the BMW part number for a replacement it came back as a plastic hose coupling with a 8 mm I.D. that goes in-line in place of the dampening device. At any rate, the fuel system needs to be free of leaks. Hope this helps. What other cars are you working on? I just picked up an e30 to replace my 530i.
