: I've just recently changed to Mobil 1 (5w 30) on my 85 (EURO) 635 with 82,000 miles. The water temperature guage is now a quarter before normal and normal in heavy traffic. Has anyone else experienced this?

While Mobil 1 may be "slipprier" than dinosaur oil, and therefore create less friction/heat, the thermostat should take this into account to keep a constant temprerature for the block/water temp..

Only if the thermostat were running wide open before (and unable to maintain the rated temp with less than full coolant flow) would the temp. come down.

In non-thermostat cooling systems (such as in air cooled aircraft installations) one SHOULD be able to see a lower oil temp/cylinder head temp with the use of slipperier oil at a constant power output in similiar ambient air temp..
