The symptoms you describe are classic Dead Cat symptoms, and replacing it should be your first task. If you plan on keeping the car for a while don't bother with the free flow cats unless you need to keep the cost down. They don't last 1/3 the life of the OEM part.
While it does sound like you have a leak in the fuel system, it doesn't sound severe enough to cause the problems that you describe. However, fuel leaks are obviously Not A Good Thing.
: : The exhaust system may be partially blocked. The noise from the converter could be broken pieces of the catalytic converter matrix rattling around. If you need to replace the converter, check the fuel-air ratio also. Running very rich can cause the converter to melt down.

: Chris,
: Thanks for the tip. I have noticed running rich symtoms from soot at exhaust tips to excessive soot on plugs. The car had an adjustable fuel pressure regulator on it when I got it last summer and it may not be set correctly? What other items affect air/fuel ratio?? Any easy way to correct??
: One other piece to the puzzle came up in conversation tonite. I posted a query a while back about the same car exhibiting an abrupt miss during hard acceleration runs and then just clearing up. Can I have a fuel pump problem that would explain this problem and the power loss scenario of last week?? If so, how can I check the system??
: Would a blocked converter cause that much of a power loss??
: Thanks for your info.
: Talk to you later,
