The intermittant behavior would lead me to believe that it's not the batteries that are the problem. It's most likely the connections on the board, or potentially the wires from the sending unit to the board.

If you are good with a soldering pencil, the best and cheapest course of action is to remove the board and inspect all of the soldering on it. The connections tend to crack over time, leading to the intermittent behavior you describe. Most of the time you don't even need to add more solder, just resolder what's there. When you're done with this process, you'll have a better board than one that you pick up used (which will fail much sooner than the one you just renovated).

: What was wrong with yours that made you replace it? My speedo and odometer work fine, but the fuel gauge, temp gauge, and tach are bad. How much $$?
