I used a Dinan chip in my '85 635 and noticed a big difference; Dinan claims +24 HP @ 5000rpm. A good chip (ex: Dinan or JC) is the most cost-effective improvement you can make. An exhaust will also help, as the stocker is quite restrictive; look at B&B, Dinan, and Metric Mechanic. HP gians will vary depending on the system you choose. As for "super flow" filters, this depends on whether you're talking about a replacement cartridge filter or a "cone" style filter. I witnessed a dyno test in which an M3 had virtually identical output curves both before and after the installation of a K&N replacement filter. A cone style filter may flow better, but since you'd have to remove the OE airbox your engine would be taking in hot, underhood air instead of cooler outside air. It would also be noisier.
