I agree, it sounds like the rear differential. The same thing happened to me, but my mount was fine. The mount ripped the metal bracing below my trunk and came loose. I had a body shop fabricate a new bracing for around $300. They said that the bracing in the older sixes were to weak, and BMW reinforced them in the early 80's.
