Replacing passenger-side window motor - Hints? (archive)

I am a new BMW owner. I have recently acquired a 1977 630CSi with a faulty front passenger window motor. I take it this is a common problem in older 6-Series. Has anyone had luck replacing the motor themselves, or is this best attempted by my local BMW mechanic? Maybe it's the switch, not the motor- is there a good way to test? What costs/time am I in for? Any advice on what I'm getting into would be helpful. Also, best place for replacement parts, new or rebuilt, etc. would be appreciated as well.
