: I am a new BMW owner. I have recently acquired a 1977 630CSi with a faulty front passenger window motor. I take it this is a common problem in older 6-Series. Has anyone had luck replacing the motor themselves, or is this best attempted by my local BMW mechanic? Maybe it's the switch, not the motor- is there a good way to test? What costs/time am I in for? Any advice on what I'm getting into would be helpful. Also, best place for replacement parts, new or rebuilt, etc. would be appreciated as well.

If the switch isn't the problem, the door panel has to be removed, which is very easy. Remove the hidden screws under the filler plugs, then feel around under the edge of the panel and pop them up one at a time.
The motor can be removed while leaving the gearbox in place. Before you do this pull the plug on the motor and use a voltmeter/test bulb to make sure that the motor is actually receiving the proper signals. It could be in the wiring-especially where the door flexes the wires.
I buy my window motors for about $10 at a pick-a-part wrecking yard. Buy one from a BACK door (e23/28) as they are little used compared to the front ones.
