: Interesting question --- I won't even pretend to know the answer. Two major things to consider: 1) the physical fit, and 2) the control of the tranny. Has the five speed ever been mated with a 3.5L engine? Maybe in the 7 series, I'm not sure. Later model 4 speeds are electronically controlled, rather than pneumatically. I think this changeover occurred in '85, but I'm not completely sure. I'm also thinking that the ECU would have to match the engine/transmission combo. Of course, nothing's impossible --- there are even those who have shoved american V-8's in our beloved 6'ers. But, it sounds like a fairly challenging endeavor....
