Which years are best/best avoided (archive)

I'm sure this subject has been debated before but a search of the archives wasn't too helpful...

I was wondering if there is much difference in performance between (a) '82-84 633 (b) '85 635 and (c) '88-89 635 -which year did the hp/torque go up anyway?

I am not interested in an M car (been there, too expensive to maintain).

Finally, am I correct that the pre-1982 cars are best avoided?
