630 head gasket (archive)

I have a 77 630 that blows white smoke when started but stops blowing smoke when warmed up. The oil has no signs of coolant. My mechanic is not sure if the head gasket is gone (only 77k miles) as the plugs don't show signs of coolant burn either. Has anyone had similar problems. The head gasket job on this car is quite labor intensive. Could this be engine oil seals or something else? Cracked head?
