: Sounds possibly like when cold, a little oil is getting by and burning and once the eng starts to warm and expand, the leak is sealing itself. This cold also be the case if it was coolant;headgasket expands when warmed up and seals off. If it is a slight leak not enough oil/water is getting in at start-up to make noticable signs on the plugs.
: Since your car is a 1977,does it still have the thermal reactors in place instead of cat? The reactors were known to get so hot that they would cause the heads to crack. My 630 was converted to a 633 head and no thermo's or cat and theres no problem passing emissions still. Since I have't had any probs. personally with my eng,I'm only theorizing the prob try B.C.G.if you don't get a better anwser here and good luck!
Try having the head bolts retorqued. Don't loosen them, just retighten them. If this doesn't work, then the head is going to have to come off to find the problem. Unfortunately, Adam is right about the likelihood of the head being cracked.
