I know you will need a new driveshaft (auto and manual do not use the same one); I am pretty sure that the differential is not the same on the E24/28 and the E23 (one is longer) so that would further complicate the process. I seriously considered making this change to my 635 when my auto transmission went south; I can confirm that this is not a simple 'drop-in' conversion.
