A/C Front Expansion Valve Removal (archive)

I have looked at my 6 series repair manual and it looks like the A/C evaporator can be removed without removing the heater core. The manual indicates removing the left side knee bolster, center console and glove compartment is about all the interior trim necessary.
Is this true? I need to replace the expansion valve.

The front A/C expansion valve on my M6 is acting up. When I start the car cold, the front unit will work for a couple of minutes and then it goes warm. The system freon charge is good. The pressures look ok(180-200 psi high side & 22-30 psi low side) until the rear A/C expansion valve closes, then the suction side will go to a negative pressure (15 inHg). The rear unit works great(35-40 deg F max cool on high fan). The front unit will reach 40 deg. F (35-40 deg F max cool on high fan) before it quits.
