: I've been reading "Tech Talk" in the Roundel and the technical editor doesn't seem to think highly of the durability of the automatic transmissions used in BMW's. I was wondering what the experience of automatic 6 series owners has been. Will these trannies take some abuse? I'd be pretty disappointed in BMW (and ZF) if they can't; I mean, we're not talking big-block Chevy-like torque here. I'm after some more horsepower out of my '85 and am somewhat concerned. Also, Dinan and Korman can modify the valve body for firmer shifts; does anybody have experience with such a modiication in these cars? Thanks for sharing your views! Larry.

Larry;

I'm not all together sure it is the auto trans.
which has the problem or the owners who neglect or abuse them. I can't tell you how many auto. trans. I has seen with 100+k which have never had the fluid/filter changed! Even with regular maintenance, no auto trans. (particularly the A pack) can hold up to the "boy racer" who revs it up to 3K in neutral at every stop light then dumps it into first and manually shifts at redline through the gears.
