: I've been reading "Tech Talk" in the Roundel and the technical editor doesn't seem to think highly of the durability of the automatic transmissions used in BMW's. I was wondering what the experience of automatic 6 series owners has been. Will these trannies take some abuse? I'd be pretty disappointed in BMW (and ZF) if they can't; I mean, we're not talking big-block Chevy-like torque here. I'm after some more horsepower out of my '85 and am somewhat concerned. Also, Dinan and Korman can modify the valve body for firmer shifts; does anybody have experience with such a modiication in these cars? Thanks for sharing your views! Larry. The auto trannies in BMW in the mid-80's were famous for toasting the "A" pack clutches when reved in neutral for maintenance or smogging. This happened after the car had been placed in drive as a result of the clutch pack being pressurized by the ATF. The secret was to shut the car down, restart and place the slecetor in "N" without going to drive at any time. Even then, rpm and time limits were necessary. This was revised in the 1989 model year and the problem doesn't exist in the revised versions of the trannies.
