I had TWO autotrans go out in 2 separate BMWs, an 85 325e and an 86 535i. Neither failed immediately after a smog check, but I suspect the smog checks weakened the A packs. These transmissions went out at 55,000 miles and 39,000 miles, respectively.

I have heard that the problems were solved after the 87 model year.

Don't know, but based on my experiences, I don't have a lot of faith in the mid 80's autotrans!

: I've been reading "Tech Talk" in the Roundel and the technical editor doesn't seem to think highly of the durability of the automatic transmissions used in BMW's. I was wondering what the experience of automatic 6 series owners has been. Will these trannies take some abuse? I'd be pretty disappointed in BMW (and ZF) if they can't; I mean, we're not talking big-block Chevy-like torque here. I'm after some more horsepower out of my '85 and am somewhat concerned. Also, Dinan and Korman can modify the valve body for firmer shifts; does anybody have experience with such a modiication in these cars? Thanks for sharing your views! Larry.
