Anybody had problems with replacement tie rods? (archive)

Just put brand new front suspension on my 84 633. New control arms and complete steering linkage. First trip out the driveway with a hard turn to the right induced a distinct and disconcerting CLUNK.

After much wiggling of the steering wheel it turns out that the bolt for the inner ball joint on the driver side is grinding on the frame brace behind the front subframe. Looking at the balljoint bolt revealed that the replacements are longer than the stock ones I took off. This thing plowed an eighth inch groove in the frame brace.

Did the same thing to a friend's E28 last week with identical parts and there is no interference. Anybody else had this problem with replacement parts? It looks like the brace needs to be ground away for balljoint bolt clearance.

TIA
PJ
