I had to replace the auto tranny in my 89 635 at 178,000 miles. It was soon after I bought the car, and I knew it was bad. I saw a 88 635 last week with 262,000 miles on it with the original auto tranny, so I guess you win some and you lose some.

: I've been reading "Tech Talk" in the Roundel and the technical editor doesn't seem to think highly of the durability of the automatic transmissions used in BMW's. I was wondering what the experience of automatic 6 series owners has been. Will these trannies take some abuse? I'd be pretty disappointed in BMW (and ZF) if they can't; I mean, we're not talking big-block Chevy-like torque here. I'm after some more horsepower out of my '85 and am somewhat concerned. Also, Dinan and Korman can modify the valve body for firmer shifts; does anybody have experience with such a modiication in these cars? Thanks for sharing your views! Larry.
