I had a similar problem with my E28 which turned out to be a handbag strap from a duffle bag that was carelessly thrown into the trunk. The strap had become caught in the latch.

I brought it to my mechanic who also owned an E28, so he knew the location and design of the latch mechanism. He applied pressure to the boot lid, directly on the rear emblem as I rocked the lid by hand while keeping the lock button depressed. The trunk eventually popped open... although the emblem was pushed in, there was no damage to the lid itself or the lock mechanism.
