On Board Computer Light (archive)

My on board computer light bulb has gone dim in a similar fashion to Mr.Sharpe's 86 635csi (message posted April 10/00).
However, the local dealship quoted a price of $90 for the bulb and 1.5 hours of labour. I was also told that the entire front dash must be removed to replace this bulb. The car is a 1988 635csi.
There must be an easier (and cheaper) way!
Any thoughts?
