Hah, this could go on for ever, but you want a REAL answer I assume? BMW stands for Bavarian-Motor-Works, originally BAW as they were an airplane manufacturer at the turn of the century where they began as Bavarian-Aero-Works (something to that effect). Like Rolls Royce was to Britain in developing high tech engines during World War 2, BMW(BAW)developed increadibly high quality engines that was to help them gain a reputation in post war times.
