What do "burned" distributor cap contacts mean? (archive)

My 400 mile-old Bosch distributor cap already has "charred" deposits on the inside contacts. Rotor is clean. After diagnosing the ignition system, I found that the coil's #1 terminal was being fed with more than the specified 2 volts. I brought the voltage to within spec by removing my aftermarket kill-switch wiring.

What else could cause these contacts to become "burnt" in appearance? Thanks group.
