What else could cause these contacts to become "burnt" in appearance? Thanks group.

I'll hazard a guess:
The burning would seem to come from too much voltage going through the contacts...
Coil was a good starting point.
Wrong plugs or excessive spark plug gap could cause a high voltage discharge.
Plug wires with high resistance might do something similar.
