: I'm wanting to buy an 88 or 89 635csi. Most of the vehicles seem to be located in California. The car will eventually being living with me at home in Tennessee, home of no smog control requirements(guess why the Smokies are now called the Smoggies). I will want to remove/disconnect the smog equipement to maximize horsepower. Is this easy for a weekend dabbler or is it even legal? Any advice?

Removing the smog equipment on an 88 or 89 635csi will do little or nothing to increase the engine HP. Gaining HP by removing emissions equipment on the mid 80's and later engine is a myth. The BMW engine stock emission levels and current HP developed is due to the combination of O2 sensor, AFM(MAF) and Motronic control unit. The cat converter are low restriction and support exhaust flow at full throttle. Even some of the most high performance BMW engines(S38, S52, etc.) will pass CA smog tail pipe emissions tests. The engine modifications that increase HP (more CC's, compression ratio, cams, bigger valves, larger intake & exhaust setup, etc.) require little compromise in the emission levels.
